Why the HP-Palm merger is nothing but good

without comments

hpTo those of you dissing my phone; and the snickering in shadows armed with 1Ghz Snapdragon Androids; with 30,000 useless apps; as you look on and think how wonderful life is with iPhone 4 coming out; with its limited multitasking routines – and locked down developer support.

I give you some food for thought

- Palm failed miserably in its marketing tactics; mostly due to lack of funds capable of tackling the might that is iPhone – and the might that is now Android.
HP changes that

- Palm failed to infuse high quality construction material in its phones; mostly due to lack of funds; and a timeline pressure from the iPhone 3GS release
HP changes that

- Due to Palms user base being so low; Developers have been slow to catch on; with over 2,000 official apps (most of them actually useful) – and more in the Homebrew catalog (yes Palm supports homebrew hacking of the linux kernel). That Developer support needs to change; and you do that with better marketing- better hardware- and better market penetration
HP changes that

- webOS is a world class operating system; with VERY high regard in the Developer space – Multitasking abilities that make the iPhone look like a Commodore 64 – and a more refined App Catalog than the porn riddled Android Marketplace. webOS is limited to the Palm Pre – but needs to expand to Slate computing; Netbooks; and infused with all of HP products – such as Internet enabled Printers that are interactive; and more.
HP changes that

- Due to previous mistakes made; Palm is heading into a 4Q financial revenue of just over 100 million dollars; which is bad – and Palm recognized that; and has done everything in its power to SURVIVE – at what ever cost. Palm would be dead without a white knight in shining armor. Would you rather be a dead company; or a company working within another company?
HP is that white knight

HP have marketing experience; a huge amount of cash – and a highly motivated team of people who are retaining at least 90% of the Palm workforce (would you do that if you were planning on eliminating webOS?)) – They want to expand webOS to tablets and more; and that can only be a good thing to Palm.

Palm essentially; is a software company; thats what it does best – and webOS is proof of that. If you have actually USED webOS – which most of you have not; and are just basing your negative remarks on nothing but whats made up in your mind – you will instantly see that it is so much superior to at least the iPhone OS (yes even iPhone 4 !) – its a joke; Android? With its bland and unattractive direction to presenting the user with actual usable information – and you know there is a reason why you need all that hardware to run Android….

So yes; HP buying and swooping for Palm (or frankly anyone with enough capital to save Palm – and expand its user base) – is a GOOD thing.

Everything I have said – is based on interviews with HP Directors; Palm Employees; Tech Journals; Podcasts and more; I do THE RESEARCH to find the facts; not the gossip laid untruths that are out there in the blogosphere.

Oh and something else; be sure to enjoy your HTC products as much as you can; as Apple comes hunting; and attempts to rip you in half – as HTC looks to Google to shield it; you really think Google gives a damn? – meanwhile in the darkness of deepest shadows; Palms resurgence starts to flower; thanks to a little thing it has called an IP Portfolio – so powerful; Apple dare not touch it. Cos yes; Palm actually invented the Smartphone; so they kinda know what they are doing.

So watch out Apple/Google – Palm is coming back; in whatever form we don’t know; but that is what makes this so exciting; and especially for us consumers; there is something different out there; and its going to be the HP-Palm hybrid mobile and slate computing devices. Bring it on.

Socks

with one comment

This evening I bought some super shoes; but I cant stop thinking about the socks I had to wear while getting fitted; they were the softest; most lush socks I have ever worn. I cant remember what they said they were made of; maybe lamb skin I dont know; but I will never forget how good they made me feel.

Famous

I tend to get overzealous when it comes to my gadgets and my Palm Pre is no exception. Palm are going through some rough times; mainly due to some cheap components in their hardware; and poor marketing. Its a shame; they are not doing so well in sales; mainly because the O.S. destroys everything that it contends with.

I went through 6 months of intense testing of phones (ask my peers; they know) – and once I found webOS – everything changed; its slick and cool – and very, very, very good at multitasking. Has great 3-D games; and is a joy to program for; thanks to its easy mojo based development kit. webOS has a great future I believe; and for that reason; I proposed a story in the big tech new site; Engadget; and they accepted it! (I didn’t write it; I just suggested the idea) How cool is that; I am famous, for 1 second.

Flying Caches

without comments

Yesterday; the girls and I went to UPS to pick up my new super monitor; a 24″ LED backlit Samsung widescreen; it is sweeeet; but enough of that; whats more important – is that we located a geocache. BTW – we watched some airplanes land at the local airport which was cool too.

When we went down the geocache road; we found a pathway; which we naturally decided to drive down; and it was very exciting..

Density of Ash

without comments

Ive been keeping a close eye on the Volcanic explosion in Iceland – the cloud has caused great pain in Europe (especially my home country of England) – where flight (up until now) had been banned. Thousands of Brits have been stranded in less civilized countries; who in turn have been upping their hotel rates to take full advantage of the situation.

It is of course a concern for me; as my family is set to travel to England in June; and the volcano could potentially spew cloudy venom for that long or longer. It is good that the stuffy Brits have relaxed the rules; and allow us to fly engines 30,000 feet up through a cloud of dense Earth Mucus

I feel safer already.

Jack

without comments

secret-of-nimh-thumbIn my youth my Nan and Mum won me a ‘Jack’ – stuffed toy from the movie ‘The Secret of Nimh’ – a very old cartoon by Don Bluth.

Ive been hiding him in secret for many years; as he is frail. On the top shelf of a kitchen cabinet; I thought he would be safe there; but oh no– he was FOUND. Now Emily and Lauren constantly fight over him – and my beloved Jack maybe ripped to shreds. They love him; poor Jack; I keep hiding him though; but they keep discovering him. I may have to get a safe.

You can just about detect him in the pic :-) Emily is waving good bye and Jack is too..

Paradigm Shift

without comments

You dont often think fondly of ‘Work Orientation’ – usually it is an array of information that is too much to contemplate anyway; as usually you are so nervous in the first place – it doesn’t matter. I was VERY fortunate to go through orientation twice.. in the space of six months. This is due to me being a contractor first; then flipping over to full time.

The second orientation was the same; however there was something new; that was actually quite interesting. This was the science behind – Paradigm Shifts; or the ability to shift your perception and look outside of the box. Naturally I am at such a high level amongst normal humans; that this comes as a normal practice for me; but I hadn’t seen it as clearly defined like it was in a class-room environment; and I enjoyed it a great deal.

I experienced a Paradigm Shift today; lights flared outside; and sparks of energy twisted around the office; as this revelation occured. There was an issue with a user publishing documents; and they wouldn’t get updated on the website; so the first thing one would do is ‘investigate the user’. I did everything; checked his rights; checked the journey between the beginning to the end; failure points – everything looked good; I couldn’t come up with a technical reason why it was happening (& why it wasn’t happening for anyone else?)

It then suddenly occured to me; this Paradigm Shift; that it was something else; something else entirely. It was the way the content person was creating the documents; and the way those documents were being looked up. It required a different line of thinking; but once the problem was found; the solution or patch fix was instantly applied. The funny thing was; there was nothing inherintly wrong with the way the documents were being created; it just hadn’t been done like that; so it required that thinking out of the box – to match the creators thinking out of the box!

I have spoken.
