Star Trek VIII: First Contact

without comments

generations
First Contact is probably the best of the 4 TNG films – involving the Federations Arch Nemesis – The Borg. A nice blend of humor and action; makes it an entertaining ride. However – I find myself bored sometimes during the majority of the film.

The first Act is by far the best part of the film; featuring some elaborate FX; although unfortunately way to short. For Trek Nerds – the meeting of the Vulcans at the end is certainly a rewarding event; along with the first warp drive test flight.

Major Likes about the movie: First Action Sequence
Major Dislikes about the movie: Awkward Borg fight scenes that aren’t particularly frightening

Been spending a couple of weeks on a very important project. A 4.46 minute video of ALL starship fire from every Star Trek movie in Chronological order. It took freakin forever – the latter movies being the most difficult because everything is so fast paced.

Jenny and I have 2 movies to go; and I am behind 1 movie in the reviews.

Meanwhile; we are prepping this weekend for Jennys mothers arrival. Moving some stuff around; and of course some garden work – seems like its going to be quite warm!!!

I was astonished to hear from my cousin earlier in the week via Facebook and this very blog. I haven’t heard from her in a very long time. Its amazing how facebook can connect like that; I guess thats why its one of the tag lines – facebook connect. ha !!

Also in other news; been working on cleaning our main picture/video storage array. We’ve got a billion pictures; and I don’t seem to have a very good system with backing up. So Ive got it down to about 75 Gigs – which I should be able to find a home for.. gotta have 75 Gigs laying about somewhere :-)

Star Trek VII: Generations

without comments

generations

Running a little behind in the reviews :-) Generations marks the introduction of the Next Generation Crew. I used to think this was my favorite series for the movies – but now Im not so sure. The original crew just seemed more proficient in what they do. & the TNG movies seem like merely extended episodes; except possibly Generations – although they seemed to try too hard with trying to create a feature film experience.

It of course has some good moments – a very impressive crash scene; and some nice battles. The story is a bit wacky – the whole idea of ‘heaven’ being something that you don’t easily want to give up; and yet Picard and Kirk happily leave the place after a few moments. Then Picard and Kirk travel to the final battle – when they simply could have traveled in time to when Picard meets the bad guy and all would be well. No Kirk Death!!

But thats the whole point of the movie to unite the Captains and provide a send off (albeit weak) for James T Kirk.

Major Likes about the movie: Crash sequence
Major Dislikes about the movie: Dislike the Music and some plot elements. Did they really have to kill off Kirk?

Happy 12th Anniversary Jenny and David

with one comment

Today – is our 12th Anniversary!!! – We are going to Charlotte to celebrate (our favorite city) – we’re hitting the Nature Museum to see their Butterfly Exhibit and then on to Frazier Park to have a picnic. We made sure the park has appropriate facilities for the kids to play; it looks like a really nice park. It will be a departure from the Cola Parks project the kids and I have been working on recently.

As a side note: Nicholas said something extrodinarily cute this morning.

Out of moth balls we dug out the electronic label maker – and the kids were amazed at its brilliance. Jenny started printing labels and Nick said;

“Look! It makes fortunes’

A reference to the labels contained within fortune cookies. What a sweetheart; such a cute boy :-)

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

without comments

st5 We continued our Trek Marathon ready for May 7th. We already preordered our tickets for a 7pm showing at a local cinema. Can’t wait to see it! But first up – VI one of the better of the series; an adventure/detective story trekking through the stars. The Klingon Empire is dieing – and an unwilling Captain Kirk has been dispatched to help facilitate a truce between the Federation and the Klingons. But others have different plans..

This marks the end of the Original Series franchise – as one crew – and obviously a lot of effort went into the film. I don’t find it one that I can constantly watch over and over again – Jenny enjoyed it a great deal; I think this is one of those ‘first time is great’ movies that unfortunatley suffers on subsequent viewings. Still – its an entertaining romp through space and thus has high marks.

Major Likes about the movie: Torpedo action sequence
Major Dislikes about the movie: Phasers a lost art on Starfleet ships nowadays?
