The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.

Yep; thats the strange error that I got on my Macbook when trying to burn a DL DVD – kind of strange right. I kinda freaked out – but I found this unusual fix to the problem.

My best guess is – it is something to do with the file system – and writing to a disc; uses the file system; that changing the language might affect. In any case; it fixed the problem and is filed under Bizarre.

Why the HP-Palm merger is nothing but good

without comments

hpTo those of you dissing my phone; and the snickering in shadows armed with 1Ghz Snapdragon Androids; with 30,000 useless apps; as you look on and think how wonderful life is with iPhone 4 coming out; with its limited multitasking routines – and locked down developer support.

I give you some food for thought

- Palm failed miserably in its marketing tactics; mostly due to lack of funds capable of tackling the might that is iPhone – and the might that is now Android.
HP changes that

- Palm failed to infuse high quality construction material in its phones; mostly due to lack of funds; and a timeline pressure from the iPhone 3GS release
HP changes that

- Due to Palms user base being so low; Developers have been slow to catch on; with over 2,000 official apps (most of them actually useful) – and more in the Homebrew catalog (yes Palm supports homebrew hacking of the linux kernel). That Developer support needs to change; and you do that with better marketing- better hardware- and better market penetration
HP changes that

- webOS is a world class operating system; with VERY high regard in the Developer space – Multitasking abilities that make the iPhone look like a Commodore 64 – and a more refined App Catalog than the porn riddled Android Marketplace. webOS is limited to the Palm Pre – but needs to expand to Slate computing; Netbooks; and infused with all of HP products – such as Internet enabled Printers that are interactive; and more.
HP changes that

- Due to previous mistakes made; Palm is heading into a 4Q financial revenue of just over 100 million dollars; which is bad – and Palm recognized that; and has done everything in its power to SURVIVE – at what ever cost. Palm would be dead without a white knight in shining armor. Would you rather be a dead company; or a company working within another company?
HP is that white knight

HP have marketing experience; a huge amount of cash – and a highly motivated team of people who are retaining at least 90% of the Palm workforce (would you do that if you were planning on eliminating webOS?)) – They want to expand webOS to tablets and more; and that can only be a good thing to Palm.

Palm essentially; is a software company; thats what it does best – and webOS is proof of that. If you have actually USED webOS – which most of you have not; and are just basing your negative remarks on nothing but whats made up in your mind – you will instantly see that it is so much superior to at least the iPhone OS (yes even iPhone 4 !) – its a joke; Android? With its bland and unattractive direction to presenting the user with actual usable information – and you know there is a reason why you need all that hardware to run Android….

So yes; HP buying and swooping for Palm (or frankly anyone with enough capital to save Palm – and expand its user base) – is a GOOD thing.

Everything I have said – is based on interviews with HP Directors; Palm Employees; Tech Journals; Podcasts and more; I do THE RESEARCH to find the facts; not the gossip laid untruths that are out there in the blogosphere.

Oh and something else; be sure to enjoy your HTC products as much as you can; as Apple comes hunting; and attempts to rip you in half – as HTC looks to Google to shield it; you really think Google gives a damn? – meanwhile in the darkness of deepest shadows; Palms resurgence starts to flower; thanks to a little thing it has called an IP Portfolio – so powerful; Apple dare not touch it. Cos yes; Palm actually invented the Smartphone; so they kinda know what they are doing.

So watch out Apple/Google – Palm is coming back; in whatever form we don’t know; but that is what makes this so exciting; and especially for us consumers; there is something different out there; and its going to be the HP-Palm hybrid mobile and slate computing devices. Bring it on.

Snow and Twit

with one comment

2-4 inches of snow ?! – Its possible; here in South Carolina; didn’t move down here for this – oh well – we’ll manage :-)

We went live with a Twitter thing at work; and Fran designed a cute little bird; well Jenny and I thought it would look better blinking. Here he is blinking! – how cute; I’ve called him Twit – the Tweeting Bird. Refresh the entire page; to make him blink again.

Now Id like to have him explode if people who are taking our surveys give us poor results.

Phones

with one comment

So I’ve been stressing about what phone to get; so what I have decided to do; is just keep mine for now (as soon it will switch to month to month) – and when the right phone comes along; I’ll get it.

In the meantime I’ve ordered a new skin and screen for a mere $7 total – and will give it a new lease of life.. I also installed a new theme that makes it ‘look’ like one of the newer generation. Sure its kinda slow; but I’m happy with it; why change?

Twitter and Monitors

without comments

Been working on a Twitter project at work; I have to say; its been A LOT OF FUN – mixing PHP and Lotus Domino together; can be a challenge; but it does work amazingly.

Basically from my works web site – you can find feeds that relate to the type of listservs you are signed up. So if you are signed up for PalmJ10 – it will give you all the twitter feeds that related to that line of business. Then you have the option to sign up or unsubscribe – once you select multiple feeds (or one) – I have a special PHP application (tied in with a MySQL db) – that automatically signs you up for these feeds (or unsubsubcribe) – kinda like a one stop shop.

Finally – this activity is recorded in a very cool log. Its been fun.

On a kinda a different note – sometime this year; I would like a $89 $73 appliance that will drive a second monitor on my Mac Mini. Sure the Mini is getting old; but really it runs everything I need it too; and adding a second monitor I think will extend its life. Ive kinda sorta already got a second monitor.

Star Trek DAC

without comments

Star Trek DAC is an overhead arcade game that released first for the XBOX 360 – then later in the year for the rest of us who own decent systems. I have the demo on the PS3 – and its great. I purchased the full version (only $9.99) on the Mac – I shouldn’t have done that – the graphics are obviously superior on the PS3.

However – it is nice to have a blast on the Mac once in a while – this is a screen recording of the intro – and you can hear JEnny in the background – haha
